Measuring a pin correctly
Close the pin first
Clip the point into its guard. Maker sizes are the closed length, not the open one.
Lay it on a ruler
Lay the pin flat with the guard end on zero. Keep it straight, because a tilted pin reads long.
Read at the end of the coil
Read the overall length from the guard to the far end of the coil, not just the shaft and not the inner edge of the coil.
Match it to the size table
Compare with 19, 23, 28, 32, 38, 46, 56, 65, 75 and 85 mm, which are sizes 000, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Makers differ by about 2–3 mm, so take the nearest size.
