Which jet lighter should you stock? The three options Thai shops actually buy
Jet lighters in Thailand fall into three groups: recognised import brands, unbranded stock sold on price alone, and importer-own brands sold direct such as M.T.T. Lion. Each suits a different situation. Here's how to tell them apart before you pay.
Five things to check before buying a box
Compare per piece, not per box
Boxes hold 15, 20 or 25 pieces depending on the brand. Divide first, or the comparison is wrong from the start.
The jet must light consistently across the box
Test-fire five pieces from one box. If some already misfire when new, quality control is loose and the next box will differ again.
Is there a refill valve?
Look for the small nipple valve on the body. If it's there the lighter refills with butane; if not it's disposable and has to be replaced every time the gas runs out.
The flame dial and lock should feel firm
A dial that drifts on its own wastes gas and is a hazard in a pocket; one too stiff to turn draws complaints.
A seller you can actually reach
This matters most for resellers: if a bad box leaves you with nobody to call, the few baht you saved were not worth it.
The three groups on the market
Recognised import brands
- Some customers ask for the name, so they're easy to sell
- Available through many wholesalers and marketplaces
- The per-piece price depends on how many middlemen are involved, so you have to ask around
- Stock gaps and defects mean chasing several parties
Unbranded stock, cheapest price wins
- Usually the lowest per-piece price on the market
- Batches look and perform differently, and regulars notice
- Many are disposable, not refillable
- The reorder may not be the same product
Importer-own brands sold direct (M.T.T. Lion)
- Published per-piece price by the box: ฿24 compact, ฿30 large
- Both models refill with butane, and the model codes MTTFF01 / MTTFF02 make reorders exact
- Message the shop directly on LINE, no middleman
- The name is less familiar than long-established brands
Matching the brand to the job
| Use case | Go for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Retail shops reselling | Compact, by the box | It costs ฿24 a piece by the box against our own ฿45 counter price, which leaves room to set your own price. |
| Trades / site work / outdoors | Large | A jet flame copes with wind better than a soft flame, and you refill instead of rebuying. |
For kitchens, everyday carry, camping or event giveaways, the full size-by-job table is in compact or large: which fits the job.
Frequently asked
How is a jet lighter different from an ordinary one?
A jet lighter forces a gas-air mix out as a narrow blue jet, so it copes with wind better and gives a more concentrated heat than the soft flame of an ordinary lighter.
Refillable or disposable?
For regular use or resale, take refillable: when the gas runs out you top up with butane and keep the same lighter. Disposables cost less up front but have to be replaced every time they run dry.
What should I check when buying a box?
Five things: the price per piece rather than per box, whether the jet lights consistently, whether there's a refill valve, whether the dial and lock feel firm, and whether the seller can be reached if something goes wrong.
What does wholesale cost?
M.T.T. Lion: a compact box of 20 is ฿480 (฿24 each) and a large box of 15 is ฿450 (฿30 each). Other brands vary by seller. If you're reselling, the margin and break-even maths are in reselling jet lighters by the box.
